Being a Good Citizen at Home

Objective:

The student will explain (and demonstrate) the responsibilities of a good citizen by

a. describing (and performing) actions that can contribute to the family as a community

b. demonstrating self-discipline and self-reliance

Materials:

Watercolor paper, pencils, watercolor paints, homework handout Responsibilities at Home

Procedures Day 1:

1. (Prior to Skype Session)  Have students write one unique thing about themselves on a sticky note. (Scholars have prepared the same way.)

2. Whole group Skype with the Scholars. (15-20 minutes)

3. Each student stands on designated spot (see Skype set up below) and introduces himself or herself. Scholars then do the same.

4. Fun Quiz: Have a few students stand back up after all are introduced and ask the scholars if they remember their names. Scholars can do the same if time allows.

5. Teachers explain the first part of the collaborative project, Responsibilities at home and sets a time for next Skype meeting.

Homework assignment sheet and watercolor paper sent home with the students and scholars.

Procedures Day 2:

1. Students bring back sketches of one responsibility they do at home. Students paint sketches with watercolors.

2. Teacher goes over the one sentence description of the pictures with Sharpie.

3. Both scholars’ and students’ pictures are scanned for upload to website or sent via e-mail for viewing prior to next Skype session.

(Our scholars scanned both the student and their own pictures.)

Alternately students can hold up their pictures to the Skype camera live during next Skype session.

Procedures Day 3:

1. Whole group Skype session with Scholars.

  • Students stand on designated spot to share their responsibility pictures. Scholars question/comment on each specifically addressing how this shows the student is a responsible part of the family.

  • Scholars then do the same with students questioning and commenting.

2. If Lesson 2, Being a Good Citizen at School, will be continued consecutively, teachers designate time for next Skype Session.

Evaluation:

Watercolor pictures should show the student understands one way they are responsible and contribute to their family as a community.

Skype Set Up:

For whole group, LCD projector with big screen in center of room is best. Computer with camera can be just to the right or left.

Group arranges themselves in a semi-circle around the big screen. We use a combination of students sitting on floor chairs, bean bag chairs, and stools. This way the camera can show all the students at once.

Mark an x with tape on the floor where a student should stand when they are individually being interviewed or reporting to the scholars. This saves time with reshuffling them back and forth between each student.  The other students can still be seen in the background but a portrait shot of the focus student transmits to the other group watching.

For small group Skyping, students can sit a bit back from a laptop on a table.
